Your Questions About Wisdom Teeth Extractions, Answered

One of our most frequently-done oral surgeries done here, our talented team have decided that your questions about wisdom teeth extractions, answered would be today’s blog deep-dive!

“What Is Wisdom Teeth Extraction?”

Simply put, wisdom teeth are the two back molars in your mouth (and the last adult teeth to emerge from the gums). Typically, they emerge between the ages of 17 and 21, and many patients find that their jaws do not have room to comfortably fit them.

The solution? Wisdom teeth extraction, which ensures that teeth do not become misaligned because of the wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth extraction can also occur before they emerge from the gums, but recovery time is longer.

“How Long Does the Average Recovery Time Take?”

Full recovery takes around two weeks. Step-by-step recovery is: blood clots forming within the first 24 hours; the cheeks and mouth reducing in swelling within two-to-three days; seven days until the dentist removes the remaining stitching; seven-to-ten days for jaw soreness to diminish; and two weeks for any facial bruising to resolve.

“What Can I Do to Make Sure My Recovery is Smooth?”

In the first 24 hours, do not:

  • Brush the teeth close to the cause
  • Rinse your mouth
  • Drink hot drinks
  • Chew or suck on food and drink

Any of these things will disrupt the formation of blood clots and slow your recovery.

Actions that are recommended to speed recovery include:

  • Smoking
  • Spitting
  • Using straws

“Am I A Good Candidate for Wisdom Teeth Removal?”

When coming in for a wisdom teeth extraction consultation, our dentists will run tests to ensure that you are an ideal candidate for the treatment. We recommend these consultations for patients as young as 16 years old.

Getting a consultation in early will circumvent issues that come along with both impacted wisdom teeth (read: wisdom teeth that do not emerge from the gums) and wisdom teeth that are already emerging from the gums.
